Suburra, the ancient name of Esquilino, a populous, animated neighborhood, crossroads of different cultures and full of taverns and shops, just like now.
But in the beginning, before the reclamation of Mecenate, which had a splendid villa on these heights, this place was far from cheerful and full of life. In ancient times, in fact, there was a cemetery where the slaves and the poor were buried.
Not only, as Horace tells, witches quit and cultivate magical herbs for their rituals and sorcery. And, always here, in the Middle Ages, many of their descendants were burned on the rocks.
All of this makes Esquilino full of mystery... a dark charm still envelops it!
